About:

This module provides an introduction to 3D data management for cultural heritage. Designed for managers, cultural heritage digitisation practitioners and researchers, and data managers. It aims to support professionals involved in 3D digitisation and curation of digital collections, this module builds competence in managing complex digital assets to ensure their accessibility, interoperability and sustainability over time.

The module covers the full lifecycle of 3D data, from initial planning and organisation to long-term preservation, access and re-use. It focuses on the policies, standards and good practices that enable implementation of robust data management tailored to 3D digitisation projects in the cultural heritage domain. Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of good data management practices for accessing their data sets in the medium to longer term.  Topics include data management plans, storage infrastructure and content management systems, backup strategies, preservation standards, FAIR data principles and strategies for handling large datasets, metadata and paradata, documentation, rights and licences to content, access control, user management and compliance with ethical and legal requirements. 

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the importance of 3D data management  for cultural heritage.
  • Understanding of the risks to digital datasets
  • Able to prepare a data management plan and to apply best practices for 3D datasets and their metadata and paradata.
  • Understanding of the legal and ethical issues relating to data management
  • Able to use standards and ontologies
  • Awareness of FAIR practices and an appreciation of the importance of enabling access and reuse of 3D datasets for future projects
  • Familiarity with repositories, open access and cloud-based solutions.
