Intelligent Methods Applied to Archaeology and Heritage (MIARP) Workshop at CAEPIA 2026

11. 11. 2026 - 13. 11. 2026

We are pleased to announce that the 3D-4CH Project and the University Institute for Research in Iberian Archaeology at the University of Jaén are organizing the workshop Intelligent Methods Applied to Archaeology and Heritage (MIARP), which will take place as part of the program of the Conference of the Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAEPIA 2026). The workshop will be held at the Former Teacher Training School in Jaén on November 11, 12, and 13, 2026.

This workshop aims to explore how intelligent methods are transforming the efficiency of practice in the fields of archaeology and integrated heritage management, enabling the processing and extraction of knowledge from large volumes of information, as well as from fragmented, noisy, and complex multimodal-scale data.

The workshop also seeks to foster critical debate, going beyond the presentation of technical success stories, to discuss the ethics and bias of intelligent algorithms in the interpretation of the past, as well as the issue of AI explainability, which may lead to conclusions that compromise scientific rigor and the authenticity of cultural memory.

We invite researchers and professionals from both the fields of computing and digital humanities to submit contributions that push the boundaries of what is possible, ensuring that technological progress goes hand in hand with transparency, reproducibility, and FAIR principles.

Topics of Interest

  • Modeling and Classification: Deep Learning applied to typology identification and artifact reconstruction, automatic shape recognition, and archaeological Big Data.
  • Landscapes and Remote Sensing: AI-based processing of LiDAR and satellite data for site detection and spatial connectivity analysis.
  • Social Process Simulation: Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) to understand cultural diffusion and the evolution of complex societies.
  • Multimodal AI and Heritage: NLP for ancient texts, intangible heritage reconstruction, and immersive aesthetic experiences (VR/AR).
  • Governance and Ethics: Bias in cultural recognition algorithms, open science protocols, and heritage risk management through predictive AI.
  • Spatial documentation and data integration: AI applied to information acquisition, processing, integration of different sources, and generation of specialized datasets.

The submission process is managed through EasyChair.
