From 3D Data to XR Experiences: Forum on the Future of Cultural Heritage Technologie
How can Europe transform 3D cultural heritage data into meaningful, immersive and sustainable experiences for future generations?
On 1 July 2026, cultural heritage professionals, researchers, policymakers, technology providers and digital innovators are invited to join "From 3D Data to XR Experiences: Forum on the Future of Cultural Heritage Technologies", a unique hybrid event showcasing the achievements and future ambitions of three flagship European initiatives: 3DBigDataSpace, XRculture, and 3D-4CH – Online Competence Centre in 3D for Cultural Heritage.
Hosted by the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC), the event will bring together experts from across Europe to explore the full journey of digital cultural heritage.
Building Europe's Digital Heritage Ecosystem
Over the past years, the three projects have addressed different but highly complementary aspects of the digital cultural heritage landscape.
While 3DBigDataSpace has focused on creating scalable infrastructures and services for managing and enriching large collections of 3D heritage data, XRculture has developed advanced technologies enabling immersive and interactive cultural heritage experiences through extended reality applications.
At the heart of this ecosystem stands 3D-4CH, the Online Competence Centre in 3D for Cultural Heritage, dedicated to strengthening professional skills, promoting standards and best practices, and supporting cultural heritage institutions in adopting and sustaining digital technologies.
Together, these initiatives demonstrate how Europe is creating an integrated ecosystem that connects data, technology and expertise.
Showcasing Technologies, Tools and Success Stories
The morning programme will feature demonstrations of key services and technologies developed within the 3DBigDataSpace project.
Participants will also discover real-world implementations through use cases presented by project partners and cultural heritage institutions, including the Hunt Museum and the 3D Pilgrim initiative.
The event will further showcase innovative projects supported through the 3DBigDataSpace grant programme, demonstrating how organisations across Europe are already applying advanced 3D technologies to preserve, interpret and communicate cultural heritage.
From Data to Experiences
In the afternoon, the spotlight shifts towards immersive technologies and the future of digital engagement.
The XRculture team will present its latest developments in 3D digitisation workflows, middleware protocols and XR applications, illustrating how advanced technologies such as Gaussian Splatting, NeRF-based reconstruction and immersive visualisation are opening new opportunities for museums, heritage sites and cultural tourism.
Participants will gain insights into how complex 3D assets can be transformed into accessible and engaging experiences for diverse audiences, from researchers and educators to visitors and local communities.
Looking Beyond the Projects
A highlight of the event will be the closing panel discussion:
Beyond the Horizon: A Unified Roadmap for Europe's 3D Cultural Heritage
Representatives from the Common European Data Space for Cultural Heritage, 3DBigDataSpace, XRculture and 3D-4CH will come together to discuss the future of Europe's digital cultural heritage ecosystem.
For 3D-4CH, the discussion will emphasise the importance of capacity building, professional training and knowledge exchange as essential foundations for the long-term success of Europe's digital heritage ambitions.
The project's work in supporting heritage professionals, promoting standards and contributing to the safeguarding of cultural heritage at risk, including ongoing efforts related to Ukraine, provides an important blueprint for future European cooperation.
